POA was proud to sponsor and support the Fortune Gala, where the theme of the evening was "overcoming adversity". It is a conversation that belongs within our community, because so much of adulthood happens between the plans we make and the circumstances we actually face.
We set out with an idea of how life will unfold. Then a door closes. A commitment becomes harder to keep. Something we have worked towards takes longer than we expected. We find ourselves having to reconsider the route.
That can be difficult to reconcile when we are used to seeing other people’s arrivals, with very little of the journey that came before.
The Gala reaffirmed our believe that adulthood is navigation. There are moments when you move with certainty, and others when the best you can do is make a considered decision with what you know. Sometimes you need to hold your course. Sometimes you need to ask for help, change direction or give yourself room to recover.
There is judgment in learning the difference.
Supporting the Fortune Gala felt connected to that belief. Its theme gave us a reason to reflect on the experiences behind achievement, and on the people who help make progress possible. Being supported, encouraged or given an opportunity can change what someone feels able to do next. It is part of why “built with the right people” means so much to us.
As we move into a new week, we want to carry that thought forward.
Some of you will be starting something you have put off. Some will be waiting for an answer. Others will be returning to a challenge that nobody around you knows much about.
Give yourself credit for what getting here has required. Then consider what would help you move forward this week. Perhaps it is a conversation you need to have, a different approach, or one manageable commitment you can follow through on.
Our thanks to the Fortune Gala team and everyone who helped bring the occasion together. We were proud to play a part.
This week, take the next step with respect for what it took to reach it.
